Samsung Galaxy A18: the leaks, the launch and what it means for the A17

Before the Samsung Galaxy A18 was official, the rumours had already named its chip. They pointed to a MediaTek processor, and early Geekbench reports even showed a Helio G99, the same chip that runs the Galaxy A17. The phone that shipped runs Samsung's own Exynos 1610 instead.

The launch itself was quiet. Samsung announced the Galaxy A18 4G by press release on 15 September 2026, and Notebookcheck described the release as silent. An A18 5G is still only a rumour. Opinions arrived before any tests: a thread on Samsung's own Members community asks whether the A18 4G is the king of the entry-level segment or a rip-off, and a NanoReview commenter objects to its price of around €280.

Behind the rumours and forum threads sits a practical question for anyone who wants an affordable Samsung with a big screen: does the new model make last year's Galaxy A17 the wrong buy? Probably not. The A18 brings a new chip and newer software, but it keeps the A17's screen, battery, cameras and update promise. And the A17 is already available refurbished on refurbed: professionally checked, cleaned and reconditioned, and hardly distinguishable from new.

Samsung announced the Galaxy A18 4G on 15 September 2026. The first confirmed configuration came from Samsung France: 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, in black, grey or light blue. Android Authority's French price comparison lists it at €279.

Samsung's own listings already show other versions. Its Swiss site lists the model SM-A185F with 128 GB, and a Samsung business listing for the Gulf shows the SM-A185G with 256 GB. Storage differs between versions, and the listings even disagree on camera stabilisation, so check the exact model number and the local price before you compare.

In the same comparison, Android Authority gives the Galaxy A17's launch price as €199, with 6 GB of RAM. Both are launch prices of different configurations, not today's prices. The A series has moved up one number a year, from the Galaxy A16 in 2024 to the A17 in 2025 and the A18 in 2026, a rhythm explained in our guide to phone release cycles. A rumoured A18 5G would be a different product; the phone on sale is the 4G model.

The main hardware change sits inside. The Exynos 1610 replaces the MediaTek Helio G99 that powers the Galaxy A17. NanoReview's comparison estimates a faster processor, but it marks several of its ratings as approximate, and no controlled test yet shows how much faster the A18 feels in daily use. With 4 GB of RAM in the first confirmed version, the thing to watch is how often apps reload when you switch between them.

The second change is software. The A18 starts on Android 17 with One UI 9, where the A17 started on Android 15. Samsung highlights Circle to Search and Gemini on the A18. The full set of Galaxy AI tools that Samsung announced for its flagship One UI 9 phones is not confirmed for this model.

Put the two phones side by side and most of the specification sheet repeats itself. Both have a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen at up to 90 Hz with the same 1080 x 2340 resolution, a 5,000 mAh battery, a 50 MP main camera with a 5 MP ultra-wide and a 2 MP third lens, and a 13 MP selfie camera. Android Authority judges the A18's hardware close to the A17's apart from the chip and software, and Notebookcheck calls the design and screen familiar.

For the A18, Samsung quotes charging at up to 25 W and 50% in 30 minutes. Treat both as Samsung's own figures until someone times them.

One detail depends on the model number: optical stabilisation. Samsung's Gulf listing for the SM-A185G says the rear camera has none, while its Swiss listing for the SM-A185F mentions it, as does Samsung's UK listing for the A17. Check the listing before you count on steadier photos. Sensor counts also say little about how photos look: low light and moving subjects need real samples, and no independent camera test is available yet.

There is no hands-on review of the Galaxy A18 yet. The first verdicts are expert readings of the specification sheet. Android Authority sees hardware close to the A17 apart from the chip and software. Notebookcheck notes the familiar design and screen alongside the six years of software updates. Android Authority and Nokiamob both question paying €279 for 4 GB of RAM when the A17 launched at €199 with 6 GB. NanoReview shows scores, but marks several of them as approximate for lack of test data.

Taken together, the strengths are the AMOLED screen, current software and the six-generation update promise. The limits are 4G-only connectivity, 4 GB of RAM in the first confirmed version and a 90 Hz screen rather than 120 Hz. No independent test yet covers battery life, real charging time, low-light photos, how warm the Exynos 1610 runs or what a repair costs.

Until those tests exist, four checks are worth making before you buy:

Model number: SM-A185F or SM-A185G, and whether its listing mentions optical stabilisation.

Network: the A18 is 4G only, so check that it supports your carrier's bands.

Memory: which RAM and storage version you are getting.

Independent tests: look for timed charging, battery life and app-reload results from retail units.

Unlikely, and the reasons sit in the specifications.

The same phone to live with: the screen, battery and cameras match, so daily use changes less than the new model number suggests.

Less memory for more money at launch: in France, the A18 launched at €279 with 4 GB of RAM, the A17 at €199 with 6 GB. Those are launch figures for different configurations, and refurbished A17s come in several memory versions, so the listing decides. An A17 with more RAM, or with stabilisation confirmed on its listing, can still be the better buy.

The same update promise: both come with six major Android generations and six years of security updates. The A18 starts on Android 17 and the A17 started on Android 15, so the A18's support ends later, but it lasts no longer.

No proof of speed yet: no test shows whether the Exynos 1610 makes the A18 feel faster with 4 GB of RAM.

The A18 does win one group: people buying new who want the newest software and the latest end date for updates. It gives the range a newer starting point without pushing the A17 out. That is a judgement about which buyers the two phones share, not a claim based on sales figures.

Two rivals sit closest to the A18.

Redmi Note 15 4G: also a large-screen 4G phone. Xiaomi lists configurations from 6 GB of RAM, a 6.77-inch AMOLED at 120 Hz, a 6,000 mAh battery and 33 W charging, against the A18's 4 GB, 90 Hz, 5,000 mAh and 25 W.

Motorola moto g86 5G: a possible step up, with 5G, 8 GB of RAM and a 6.67-inch AMOLED at 120 Hz in Motorola's documented version.

On paper, both give you more. Samsung's answer is its documented promise of six Android generations for the A18, so check each maker's own update policy before you assume a rival matches it. A bigger battery or more megapixels on a specification sheet does not prove longer battery life or better photos either. Prices and configurations vary by market. Buy the Galaxy A18 new if you want the newest Android version out of the box and the latest end date for Samsung's six-generation promise, and 4 GB of RAM covers the apps you use. If steadier photos matter to you, check the model number first.

Choose a refurbished Galaxy A17 if you want the same screen, battery and cameras for less money, and you would rather pick your own memory version.

Choose a refurbished Galaxy A17 5G if you need 5G. It pairs the same screen and battery with an Exynos 1330 chip.

Look at the Honor 400 Lite or the Redmi Note 15 5G if a 120 Hz screen and a bigger battery, 5,230 or 5,520 mAh, matter more to you than Samsung's six-generation promise. Check each maker's update policy before you decide.

Keep your Galaxy A17 if you already own one: the A18 offers little reason to switch.
